Description : In The Devil on Two Sticks, a moralistic novel by Alain-Rene Le Sage published at the beginning of the 18th century, the narrator accompanies the Devil across the roofs of houses, observing at his ease what’s happening inside. This book met great success in the 19th century, when the Devil was often associated with studies of social customs.

Here he sports a hook to rummage through trash and the basket where he puts his findings - here, the old stories of Parisians that help him come up with new ones. He also has a magic lantern, an ancestor of the projector that lets him show pictures while accompanying them with a story. On this superbly lithographed poster, Paris is mapped by the loop of the Seine and the windmill of Montmartre.
